Just…What is Slice in the Cricut World?

The Slice tool is an option in Cricut Design Space that allows you lot to separate and crop out two overlapping images or layers in order to create a whole new pattern.

This tool is Amazing, and 1 of my favorites – past the way – because with it you lot can personalize and create new custom designs with existing shapes, and images.

You got this!

Seriously….

If y'all master the Slice tool, Yous Will Principal your Cricut.

If you are a beginner and are still figuring out Cricut's software, I recommend that you read my fantastic andUltimate Cricut Pattern Space tutorial.

  • Where is Piece in Cricut'south App?
  • Combining Piece with other tools like Weld, Duplicate, Flip, and more!
  • Examples of when to apply Slice.

Prepare to go a pro at slicing?

Tip: if you want to larn everything you need to know about iron-on (HTV) and primary how to use information technology on unlike surfaces, make sure to check this amazing tutorial I put together.

The Piece tool is located at the bottom of the Layers panel, and it activates when you take ONLY ii layers selected.

Y'all CAN'T Slice more than 2 layers considering the program wouldn't know what shape to cut against the other 1. Don't be disappointed though, I volition show you a pull a fast one on to Slice multiple images later this mini-tutorial.

Now, let's see in a glance how Slice works.

Check out the following graphic and allow'southward have a little chat of what I did.

Slice footstep by step Info-Graphic
  1. The original designs were a square and a center right? However, I wanted to cutting the eye out – that sounds creepy lol – of the square.
  2. To do this, simply place the heart on tiptop of the square, select both layers and click on the Slice push.
  3. After slicing you will always have 3 different layers.
    • The one you lot wanted to "piece" out of the bigger shape – In this example, the pink heart.
    • A copy of the shape y'all wanted to "slice" out – In this case, the blue heart.
    • And last just not least, and the reason you sliced in the first identify, a new design with a cut out of the prototype you used to "slice" against – In this instance the blue square.

Easy, right?

Note: This same concept applies to TEXT, instead of a heart yous could have used a word or even a line of text. So to piece text you but demand to make sure all of your text is in a single layer.

Now that you lot know how slice works let's come across what else yous can practice with this tool.

How to Piece Multiple images on Cricut Design Infinite?

The following screenshot is a yellowish star with multiple circles on peak. My goal with this design is to cut out all of the circles from the star.

But, how do we practice information technology if we have more than than two layers?

Piece every circle confronting the star 1 at the fourth dimension? No thank you lot! that would take forever.

The answer to this is "WELD."

Slice won't piece of work when you have more than 2 layers

When you lot take multiple – scattered – layers and you lot want to cutting them out of another shape, you can't exercise this but by selecting them and and so slicing.

Call up Cricut Only allows you to slice ii layers at a time.

Piece multiple images step by step Info-Graphic

This is what you need to practice to piece out multiple images, and or shapes.

  1. Select all of the layers you want to cut out and weld them. The "Weld" tool is located at the bottom of the layers panel just to the right of the slice tool.
  2. After you lot weld, you will see that all of the circles are in one layer. Now, overlap them on peak of the star, and click on the slice pick.
  3. After slicing you volition have iii different results.
    • Imperial circles
    • Yellow circles
    • A star with multiple cut-outs.

IMPORTANT: Subsequently welding, you won't be able to carve up the circles, and then if you call back you will need them after you should make a copy, then group them all, and hibernate their visibility.

I explain this ameliorate on my "Weld, Adhere and Group" article. All of these options are sort of intertwined so I encourage you to check it out.

I have seen multiple tutorials on Cricut Design Space, only I take still to see one where you can learn how to Crop Images and or photos.

Circuitous images or photos like .jpg or .png files are not really meant to be cut piece by pieces like an SVG or cut file. These types of images are for y'all to Print and and then Cut.

When you upload the photograph, you DO accept the option to Crop it, but that is a foursquare crop and nothing like what I am about to show you. If yous want to larn the Print and so Cut process for photos and/or .jpg images I encourage you to read my super amazing tutorial.

Ready for cropping?

  3. Look that this time, for the "slice result" we are really using the hearts. This but goes to show that you take many possibilities with this program.

Let's see more examples.

Use different shapes to Crop your photos

I used an octagon, a star, a circle to create different crops and effects for my images. If you want more of a standard crop you can also utilise a square and unlock its proportions to create a rectangle.

Notation: the proportions can be changed by selecting the shape/layer and clicking on the piffling lock located on the left-hand corner of the selection.

What is the Piece and Set Method?

When y'all are using multiple colors in your projects, there's a moment where you'll need to acquire how to layer them upwardly on the surface of your project.

This is extremely important when using materials like Cricut Infusible Ink, where your project will be ruined in yous don't apply this method.

Look at the following instance.

This a design of an date ring and outline that can be used to brand a t-shirt with Infusible Ink.

Initially, the outline is solid, and if y'all were to layer upwardly both similar this when using Infusible Ink materials, your project won't wait good.

Trust me!

To apply the "Slice and Set" method, marshal both images, select them, and click on "Piece."

Afterward slicing you'll take iii dissimilar images (sometimes, more).

And, in this case, nosotros but need two of them, the black layer, and the outline layer with the cut-out nosotros just made.

To learn more about using Infusible Ink on t-shirts, make certain to check out this step by step tutorial I wrote.

Although the "Piece and Gear up" method is mainly used with Cricut Infusible Ink products, you lot tin can also use information technology with adhesive and HTV vinyl.

If you keep layering up colors and layers, your pattern tin can expect beefy, and you lot don't want that!

Where is Slice in the Phone App?

All of the things I've been teaching yous throughout this tutorial can be washed inside the Cricut Design Space App.

In Cricut's App, the "Slice Tool" is in the "Action" push located on the bottom panel of the canvas area.

location of slice in Cricut design space app.

Recollect that you need to accept two images selected to activate the slice tool.

I selected some collywobbles and flowers. Yous will be able to see them amend in the next screenshot.

What I did was to organize the flowers in a more appealing mode. I overlapped them a fiddling bit too – just you lot don't have too – and clicked on "Weld" to create a whole new shape/or single layer.

Since I wanted to take more flowers on every wing I duplicated the already welded flowers and after arranging them I welded them again.

Use flip vertical to mirror flowers to perfection, arrange, weld and slice.
Flip Vertical and finalize by welding and then "Slice"

These are the following steps to finish our designs:

  1. To add together the flowers to the lower wings, first select both of the tiptop floral designs and click on "Duplicate."
  2. So click on Flip – Select Flip Vertical to create a perfect mirror – and organize the new floral blueprint on pinnacle of the remaining wings.
